This is the cutest thing I have ever heard in my life, I would be so sad if this wasn’t true! Apparently baby elephants do it for the same reasons that babies suck their thumbs, for comfort! It also server another purpose. It helps them learn how to control the more than 50,000 individual muscles in the trunk. (yes, you read that right, there are over 50,000 muscles in an elephant’s trunk. Crazy stuff!)
Did You Know?
Elephants also use their trunks for a sort of advanced form of smelling (it’s kind of gross and I’m glad that humans don’t do this) They will touch the end of the trunk to a pile of poop or some urine and put the trunk in their mouth and this apparently helps them discern pheromones that their trunks may not pick up!
