It’s true green eyes! The only colors that are more rare are silver and amber, but many believe silver to be a variation of blue. The most common eye color is brown, with an estimated 55% of people having brown eyes. The next most common is Hazel, which is found in 5%-8% of the population, Blue eyes are the same at 5%-8%.

-There are two different kinds of melanin (the pigment that allows skin to tan and makes brown eyes brown) There is a dark, black melanin and a yellow melanin. An eye with neither melanin, either black or yellow, will be blue. Green eyes are caused by low levels of black melanin and higher levels of the yellow melanin.
– Green eyes have been around for thousands of years. They were present in Siberia during the Bronze Age.
– One village in Western China has many residents with blonde hair and green eyes. These villagers did not know how this occurred until DNA testing showed that 2/3 of the villagers were of Caucasian origin.
– People with light colored eyes (blue, green or gray) may have an increased chance of eye cancer. Specifically one called “intraocular melanoma”. Researchers believe that the pigment in the iris of brown eyed people may protect the eye from sun damage and UV exposure.
– Eyes appear green and blue for the same reason that the sky appears blue. It is caused by something called “Rayleigh scattering”.
