It’s true, according to studies some mother squirrels adopt abandoned or orphaned baby squirrels.
It appears that this phenomenon mostly occurs in red squirrels. It only happens when the new mother is related to the baby. The missing mother may be a sister, or cousin.
This was discovered in Canada by a doctoral candidate. He noticed that one nest had an extra pup in it. When he looked back at his records he noticed that this wasn’t the first time this had been documented. There were multiple incidences of extra pups being found in nests, but he also found that the empty nests belonged to a female relative of the adoptive squirrel.
